Why do I need my staff trained?
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 require ALL PLANT operators to be trained in the use of their equipment.
The Independent Training Standards Scheme and Register (ITSSAR) is a self-financing and non-profit making organisation, formed to offer accreditation to training instructors and organisations supplying industrial truck and construction training services to industry
The length a course will depend on what type of machine is used and the environment it is used in.
1-day refresher courses for experienced operators that haven’t had any training for at least a 3-year period (this is the time period recommended by the HSE to employers whereby staff need to be refresher trained, on all site equipment).
3-5day courses: for novices who have not received any formal training and have no experience.
All courses begin with classroom time where you will learn the theoretical requirements of the vehicle they are being trained on. Includes all relevant aspects of health and safety and a multiple-choice Theory Test.
Practical training begins with an explanation as to the operation of the relevant truck.

Practical elements cover daily vehicle checks and safe loading techniques – you will then practice the operation of the vehicle until you become proficient, whereby a short practical test will take place.
It is the responsibility of the customer who needs the training that the vehicles have a LOLER or PUWER in date inspection and that it is present with the machine, also the PPE is provided for all candidates being trained.
